Biloxi Diary - Day 1

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Greetings from "the Team" here in Camp Biloxi, MS. After a LONG and sometimes traffic delayed commute on Sunday, we arrived in Biloxi at 11pm Central time (mid-night Eastern) - sigh!!! Pastor Ralph has some "interesting" delays as well, but got in about the same time. After much chat - we were sound asleep at midnight, local time. ;-) Here is the report from the Team for Monday.

Monday, June 25, 2007:

Our first day at camp Biloxi was very eventful, with the day starting at 6am. We all stumbled to breakfast and some of us (Elizabeth, Caroline, Christina) were a little late and missed part of it. We learned from our first mistake that we should from now on arrive either early or on time for our meals. But we did have an excuse for being late - because our bedrooms had bugs and spiders crawling around. After we got our assignment we arrived at this little yellow painted house, with a green shingled roof. The owner, Cynthia, was a very nice woman who would later tell us many stories about her life, as well as the house, which was over 30 years old! The house was lifted off its foundation three times while she was inside, by a tornado, and when it came back down, the sheetrock cracked. Cynthia, her husband, and her youngest son, are all living in a FEMA trailer in their backyard. We all worked extremely hard insulating their attic, ro utering base board, and gardening. By lunch time we were all so hungry that the simple sandwiches of bologna and Kraft singles tasted like fine French cuisine. We spent our day working up a sweat and talking to Cynthia who was driven by her faith. It was an excellent experience, but we were glad to get into the cool bus after a hard days work.

After we finished at Cynthia's house, we traveled down the coast to see more destruction from Katrina. We actually were hoping to go to Sonics to get a root beer float, but when we got to the place where it was supposed to be, we discovered that only the foundation remained. Around 5pm, we arrived back at Camp Biloxi, and took cool showers, and prepared for dinner which consisted of pork chops and mashed potatoes. After dinner, we sang worship songs and prepared for another day's work. Blessings to you all from,

The Team
